Yelp ads

Why response time makes or breaks your Yelp ads.The ad spend usually isn't the problem.

The short answer

On Yelp, a homeowner often sends the same quote request to several businesses at once, and the first useful reply usually gets the conversation. If you answer hours later, you paid for the lead and a faster competitor got the job. Fix the reply time before you touch the budget.

The ad spend isn't the problem. The reply time is.

When Yelp “doesn't work,” the first thing to check is not the budget or the keywords. It's how long your leads waited for an answer.

Here is why. A homeowner who needs a fence fixed or a drain cleared often sends one quote request to several businesses at the same time. Then they wait to see who answers. Whoever replies first, with something useful, gets the conversation. Everyone after that is competing for whatever attention is left.

Your ad did its job. It put you in front of the homeowner. The reply time decides whether you get anything for it.

What slow response actually costs you

For an owner-operator, a 4+ hour response time is common. You check messages between jobs, at lunch, or at night. That feels reasonable. To the homeowner, it means you never showed up.

Here's an example with made-up numbers, to show how slow replies change what a lead really costs you:

ExampleSlow repliesFast replies
Monthly Yelp ad spend$1,500$1,500
Leads3030
Cost per lead$50$50
Leads that turn into a real conversation (example)1020
Cost per real conversation$150$75

Same ads, same budget, same leads. The only thing that changed is how many people were still listening when you replied. In this example, slow replies doubled the real cost of every conversation.

What instant response looks like

TFP Landscaping is a Phoenix landscaper with 18 years in business: one owner, several crews, no office staff. Before working with us, their average response time was over 4 hours, and Yelp ad spend was being wasted because leads went cold.

We set up Yelp ads management with GEO tuning and an AI that answers Yelp Request a Quote messages right away. In the first 30 days, leads rose 284% to 242, 179 of them from Yelp. The AI booked 28 estimates end to end, and TFP reported a 39.95% close rate on the estimates that were booked. The owner put it simply:

“I'm getting more jobs with the same ad spend.”

The full numbers are in the TFP Landscaping case study.

How to fix it in your own business

1. Measure your real response time

Pull your last 20 Yelp leads. For each one, write down when it arrived and when you first replied. Ignore the best few. Look at the typical one.

2. Make the first reply do work

“Thanks, we'll be in touch” doesn't count. A good first reply confirms you do the work and offers a time for someone to come out and give an estimate, or a link to pick one. That books the estimate.

3. Automate what doesn't need you

The first reply and the booking don't need the owner. They need to be fast and accurate. Save yourself for the estimate and the close.

4. Judge Yelp on cost per booked job

Yelp's dashboard shows clicks and leads. The number that matters is what you spent divided by the jobs you actually booked. Once replies are fast, that number tells you whether to spend more, spend less, or stop.

The takeaway

Before you raise your Yelp budget, fix your reply time. Speed to lead is usually the cheapest improvement available, and it makes every dollar you already spend work harder.

FAQ

Questions owners ask

How fast should I respond to a Yelp lead?
As close to instantly as you can. The homeowner is looking at several businesses at once. A reply in seconds or minutes keeps them talking to you; a reply hours later usually reaches someone who has already picked another company.
Can AI actually respond to Yelp Request a Quote messages?
Yes. An AI can reply right away, confirm you do the work and book the estimate inside the conversation. For TFP Landscaping, the AI booked 28 estimates end to end inside Yelp Request a Quote in 30 days.
How do I measure my own response time?
Pull your last 20 Yelp leads. For each one, write down when it came in and when you first replied. Look at the middle value, not the best one. That is your real response time.
Should I raise my Yelp budget if leads aren't turning into jobs?
Not until you know your reply time. If leads are waiting hours for an answer, more budget mostly buys more leads for your competitors. Fix the response first, then decide on budget using cost per booked job.
What does Viridia charge to manage Yelp ads?
15% of your monthly Yelp ad spend, with a $200 a month minimum per Yelp page, and 10% on spend above $5,000. Month to month with 30 days' notice. Instant replies come with The Viridia Partnership, or as a $297 a month response layer add-on.
